Sistine Chapel Art

We thought it would be fun to paint our favourite Bible stories as though we were painting the Sistine Chapel. We lay on the floor, stuck the paper to the underside of our tables and created our works of art. However, after researching the topic we discovered that Michelangelo didn't paint his masterpiece lying down, he actually sat or stood on a high platform with his arms stretched over his head. As a result he had a sore neck and problems with his eyesight for many months after. We found out lots of interesting information about this famous tourist attraction. Have a look at some of the facts below.

Fun facts about the Sistine Chapel:
1. It was named after Pope Sixtus IV who ordered the chapel to be built in 1477.
2. Michelangelo was a famous sculptor and did not want to be a painter. However he could not refuse to do something when asked by a pope so in the end he agreed to the project and worked on it from 1508- 1511
3. The last figure Michelangelo painted was God, he wanted to wait until he felt his skills were good enough to paint God perfectly.
4. Michaelangelo wrote a poem about the terrible experience of painting the chapel. In the poem he complained about the terrible smell and the heat in the chapel.
5. Cardinals meet in the Sistine Chapel to elect a new pope.
6. Over 5 million people visit the Sistine Chapel every year.
