Poetry

We read a selection of poems, we thought about the message the poet was trying to share in the poem and we painted pictures to show our understanding. Take a look at our amazing work and what we had to say about it.

The poems we read were:

The Smile

I had an extra smile

When I left the house today

I thought I'd give it to someone

I passed along the way.

I tried to give the smile away

But incredibly

Each time I gave it to someone

They'd give it back to me.

So now I have a bunch of smiles

What am I to do?

I think I'll keep a couple

Then give the rest to you.

"I did the smile poem. I did two paths. He was giving a smile to them. He put his smile all around the world."

"The adult in the middle is giving them smiles. There are two smiley faces."

"I did the smile poem because I want everyone to be happy! You can see that there is a man in the middle of the page spreading the smile to the people."

"I did a lot of smiles and arrows to the other smile, I did bubbles around most smiles."

"I did the smile poem because I think about my nana up in Heaven. I did a man passing a smile to s girl. There was lines going from the man to the girl. I did one love heart. I did six smiley faces. I did the blue sea. There was a small bit of grass."

"I did about fifty smiles because it made me think about smiles."

Friends

How good to lie a little while,

And look up through the tree,

The Sky is like a kind big smile,

Bent sweetly over me!

The Sunshine flickers through the lace,

Of leaves above my head,

And kisses me upon the face,

Like Mother, before bed.

The Wind comes stealing over the grass,

To whisper pretty things;

And though I cannot see him pass,

I feel his careful wings.

So many gentle Friends are near,

Whom one can scarely see,

A child should never feel a fear,

Wherever he may be.

"I drew most of my friends because the poem is called Friends and it talks about friends in it."

"I drew someone smiling because her friends have been nice to her. Now she is very very happy."

The Crayon Box That Talked

Wouldn't it be terrible?

Wouldn't it be sad?

If just one single colour

Was the colour that we had?

If everything was purple?

Or red? Or blue? Or green?

If yellow, pink or orange

Was all that could be seen?

Can you just imagine

How dull the world would be?

If just one single colour

Was all we got to see?

"My painting shows the variety of colours in the world."

"I drew lots of living crayons because it shows that there are lots and lots of colours in the world. I think that's what this poem means to me."

"I painted myself and my friend on the trampoline. The rain is colourful."

"I drew this because it shows that the world is not just one colour, it can be loads of colours."

"I painted someone very sad because there was only two colours in the world."

Your Best

If you always try your best

You'll never have to wonder

About what you could have done

If you'd summoned all your thunder.

And if your best

Was not as good

As you hoped it would be

You still could say

"I gave today

All that I had in me."

"I drew a thinking bubble and inside the bubble I painted a picture of a heart with thunder inside. Then I painted a copy and a pencil. Also a speech bubble saying I gave all I had."

 Wind on the Hill

No one can tell me,

Nobody knows,

Where the wind comes from, 

Where the wind goes.

It's flying from somewhere,

As fast as it can,

I couldn't keep up with it,

Not if I ran.

But if I stopped holding,

The string of my kite,

It would blow with the wind,

For a day and a night.

And then when I found it,

Wherever it blew,

I should know that the wind,

Had been going there too.

So then I could tell them,

Where the goes...

But where the wind comes

Nobody knows.

"I drew wind. I drew a tree. I drew the leaves falling from the tree. I drew a tractor going up the hill."

"I drew wind because it it cool and I liked the poem. In my picture there is leaves and a small boy. In my picture the wind is blowing. I play in the wind and love it. I painted one tree and all the leaves fell off."

"I drew a little girl letting go of her kite on a windy day because I like the verse about letting go of the kite and I like the poem."

"I drew wind because it is cool. I did leaves because they fell off the tree. I did people in the wind. The wind is fun. I like the blue sky. The weather is cold. I like the poem."

"My picture is about the wind. I like the wind because it's fun. It is fun in the wind. I like playing with a kite in the wind. I like the wind."

"I drew a tree with all it's leaves flying away. I picked this poem because I like wind. I drew a boy and his kite flying. My favourite verse is
But if I stopped holding the string of my kite,
it would blow with the wind for a day and a night."

"I drew a tree with all the leaves flying away. I play in the wind and throw leaves. I drew a tree about to break."
